Born in Brazil in 1965, Stela Barbieri is a plastic artist as well as an educator and story teller.
She is the director of the Project “Educational Action” of the Tomie Ohtake Institute where she also organizes and develops training courses for teachers, prepares the documentation for the exhibitions that take place at the Institute and organizes courses about the world of art, for the general public.
From 2000 till 2005, she took part in the NGO CEDAC project “The real school” where she developed special classes dedicated to improve the teaching of Art in Brazil’s state schools.
As a plastic artist she works with different material such as latex, glass, pigments, sand, clay and beeswax. Through her work, she transforms the original organic form into a new body.
She held her first exhibition in 1990, and since then she has been showing her works regularly in different cultural centres and institutions, in Brazil and abroad.
She has also been a guest artist at various exhibitions.
In addition she gives performances based on traditional stories as well as she acts in several plays throughout Brazil.
In 2006, she decided to try her hand at books together with Fernando Vilela and published “Bumba-meu boi” and “A menina do Fio” (Finalist in the Jabuti Literary Prize).
